“When Rosa Maria Perez found out she would soon be getting a work permit because of a recent change in visa policy under the Biden administration, she was so overwhelmed by emotion that she both laughed and cried.

Perez, 31, has been living in the United States as an undocumented immigrant for almost half of her life. Because she was a victim of a crime and cooperated with police during the investigation, she was able to apply for a special visa, called a U visa, that is meant to help undocumented immigrants feel safe coming forward without fear of deportation.”
