“CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling could give thousands of undocumented immigrants a chance to avoid deportation, including Maria Chavalan Sut, an asylum-seeker from Guatemala who found sanctuary in a Charlottesville church.

The court ruling Niz v. Chavez is the second high court opinion that decides the way in which the U.S. Department of Homeland Security informs clients about their notices to appear.

This ruling specifically impacts immigrants who never showed up to their required court hearing because they never received a proper notice, which is what happened to Chavalan Sut.”
