Trump Appointed Hundreds of Judges. Fear of Their Rulings May Be Holding Back Biden on Executive Orders

Published

on

According to this article on Time, by Brian Bennett and Abigail Abrams

“President Biden has been on a blitz of issuing presidential executive orders. Earlier this month, he signed his 94th order, one aimed at helping women travel to other states for abortions and finding ways for those eligible to access Medicaid coverage. Before that he signed orders that sought to help bring hostages home, end labor disputes, protect access to reproductive health care, counter anti-LGBTQ state legislation and address police misconduct.

Not since Jimmy Carter has a president issued as many orders at Biden’s pace, according to a tally kept by the University of Santa Barbara’s American Presidency Project. Yet for some progressives, Biden isn’t wielding that power nearly as strongly as he could. Not only on abortion, but also on immigration, the climate, and gun safety, lawmakers and activists are pressuring the President to act more assertively by signing more expansive orders that push policy in the direction they want it to go.”

Republican Governors and Attorneys General Think Every State Is a Border State

Published

According to this article on Reason, by FIONA HARRIGAN

“Republican officials in several states have taken immigration enforcement into their own hands since President Joe Biden took office, arguing that the federal government is not adequately addressing migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border. These efforts often duplicate federal enforcement measures and rack up bills for taxpayers with little or no public safety payoff.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed legislation requiring every Florida law enforcement agency that operates a county jail to enter into an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. These agreements deputize state or local cops to enforce certain aspects of federal immigration law. The new Florida law seems largely redundant, since Border Patrol agents already have jurisdiction throughout the state and 46 of its 67 counties already have 287(g) agreements.”

‘They were preyed upon’: immigration lawyers denounce transport of migrants

Published

on

According to this article on The Guardian, by Erum Salam

“In the wake of the transport of nearly 50 Venezuelan asylum seekers and migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard by Florida’s rightwing Republican governor Ron DeSantis, immigration lawyers representing the group have labeled the move as an “appalling” political stunt that should never be allowed to happen again.

DeSantis – who is both an ally and a rival to Donald Trump – has claimed responsibility for the flight as an attempt to protest Joe Biden’s immigration policy. But the move had been widely condemned as racist and abusive towards those dumped on the upmarket resort island in Massachusetts.”

Biden says he plans to run in 2024, but “it’s just an intention”

Published

on

According to this article on AXIOS, by Rebacca Falconer

“President Biden said it’s his intention to run for re-election, but it’s “much too early” to make a “firm decision” on 2024.

Why it matters: Biden’s comments during an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday evening mark a departure from previous remarks he and White House aides have made about the 2024 presidential election.

Driving the news: Biden told CBS’ Scott Pelley in the “60 Minutes” interview filmed before he flew to the U.K. to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral that “a whole range of things come into play” if he’s running for re-election, including election laws.”
