Administration Faces ‘Massive Logistical Undertaking’ in Afghanistan

According to this article on Government Executive, by ERIC KATZ

“The Biden administration is looking to surge resources to its efforts to evacuate U.S. citizens and Afghan nationals who supported the government, facing a tight timeline and difficult circumstances exacerbated by operational neglect in recent months and years.

The government faces a major challenge to repatriate Americans in Afghanistan and process local citizens in the Special Immigrant Visa or other programs before the Aug. 31 deadline when the military is currently planning its complete departure. The State Department has temporarily paused bringing home its civilian staff, leaving behind a “core diplomatic presence” at the Kabul airport to help complete the evacuation. With 11,000 self-identified Afghans in the pipeline and potentially tens of thousands more joining U.S. citizens in seeking immediate departure, the Defense Department said on Tuesday it is increasing its capacity to airlift up to 9,000 people per day out of the country.”

According to this article on Fox News, by Matt Leach and Matt Wall

“YUMA, Ariz. – Illegal immigrants regularly use Uber to travel from the border to destinations within the interior of the United States, two drivers in the border town of Yuma, Arizona, told Fox News.

One driver said the riders confirmed to him that they were in the U.S. illegally. Another said he deduced their immigration status based on the circumstances, such as getting picked up with bags alongside large groups in remote locations near the border with destinations at hotels. Fox News granted both anonymity so they could speak freely.

“I just will get a notification of a pickup, head down to the location and there will be a group of 20 plus immigrants standing on the corner, waiting for Ubers,” one driver told Fox News. “It’s legit in the middle of nowhere.””

Analysis: Republicans see election opportunity in Biden border struggles

Published

According to this article on Reuters, by Ted Hesson and Matt Spetalnick

“WASHINGTON, Dec 21 (Reuters) – The leading Republican vying to unseat an Arizona Democrat in a crucial U.S. Senate race next year gets heated when he talks about Democratic President Joe Biden’s “failed border policies,” occasionally throwing in expletives when decrying their alleged financial cost and what he says is the threat they pose to Americans.

The candidate, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, is betting the message will resonate with voters Republicans need to mobilize in the 2022 elections to change the balance of power in Congress.

“Immigration in and of itself is not a bad thing,” Brnovich, himself the son of immigrants from Montenegro and Croatia, said in an interview with Reuters. “But illegal immigration undermines the rule of law.”

Echoing some of the hard-line rhetoric of Republican former President Donald Trump, Brnovich supports the construction of a wall between the United States and Mexico and tougher immigration enforcement.”
