“Here’s the latest on the increasingly tense situation at the Southwestern border, where federal and state authorities are bracing for an influx of migrants who want to seek asylum in the U.S:

Abbott’s inspection toll
A report released Wednesday by leading Texas economist Ray Perryman estimated that stepped up commercial truck inspections ordered April 6 by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott cost more than $4.2 billion in lost goods and services. The inspections were meant to interdict people and drug smuggling.

Abbott’s inspections were widely criticized by Republican and Democrat politicians and business leaders because they snarled traffic on international bridges, creating hours- and days-long delays for commercial crossings. Perryman said about $1 billion a day in cross-border trade to the United States was lost and $470 million a day to Texas.”
